Wave of Recalls: Calls for a Discussion of Safety

In the past two weeks alone, Kroger recalled 2 brands of its ice cream from grocery store shelves, Stonyfield recalled packages of their YoBaby yogurt, Ranbaxy Laboratories recalled nearly 30,000 packs of allergy medication in the U.S., and Honda recalled 24, 889 if its Minivans.

The reasons for the recalls range from mislabeling of ingredients and potential contamination to defective products and packaging. Despite differences in the goods, industries and locations, all of the recalls had one issue in common; the safety of the product was in question.

Whether it’s the ice cream we eat, or the cars we drive to go get that ice cream, safety matters. A recall, by nature, means that the potentially unsafe product is on the shelf, if not already in the hands of a consumer. All too often, the focus of a recall is on the immediate costs to the company. While these initial costs can be damaging to a business, the focus should be on the secondary, unforeseen costs associated with a weakened brand reputation and subsequent loss of customers. The real concern with recalls should be producing a product that is not safe for use or consumption.

We are all consumers, we all drive cars, take medication and read the ingredient labels on our food if we have allergies. Manufacturers and suppliers have a unique responsibility to ensure that only quality, safe products are on store shelves and dealership lots. These products will go from store shelf to cupboard and from car lot to garage. For this reason, among many others, companies need to better manage their product safety and Quality.
